Pentecost Homily

This weekend’s lectionary is all about various aspects of the Holy Spirit. In the first reading from Chapter 2 of Acts of the Apostles, we hear of how the Holy Spirit arrives with a loud sound like a driving wind and looks like tongues of fire ! The effect of the Holy Spirit on the gathered people of different cultures, was that they could hear each other in their own language even though they spoke different languages.

In Psalm 104 the psalmist exhorts us to bless the Lord by giving thanks and praise for the wonderful ways that God renews the face of the earth. The implication here is God works through the Holy Spirit to bring about life and renewal in all of us !

In the second reading from St Paul’s letter to the Romans, we hear about the comparison between how we can live our lives in the flesh or with the benefits of the Holy Spirit.

In the Gospel of John, we hear of how Jesus reminds his disciples of their need to keep his commandments and how the Holy Spirit will come to teach them and to remind them !

So, in the first reading we learn about what the Holy Spirit will sound and look like. The Psalm tells us how the Holy Spirit will be God’s agent on Earth. The second reading we learn about the big difference in our lives if the Holy Spirit is present in us. And finally, the Gospel explains to us the connection between God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.

For the Apostles the Holy Spirit enabled them to let go of their fears and to go out into the open, gifted with the gift of preaching and witnessing to the Good News. The miracle that occurs is that those who hear them preaching understand what they are saying ! And guess what ? The Holy Spirit will have the same effect on us !

With the Holy Spirit in us, there will be clarity in our speech and discussions. In living with those who we love we will most likely we will be able to transform people and societies. And most importantly, with the Holy Spirit we will know the difference between good and evil and to always choose what is intrinsically good.

So brothers and sisters, the eucharist we receive will foster and deepen our spiritual lives as Jesus with the Holy Spirit and God the Father come to us to console us. As we live our eucharistic lives, we are living according to the Holy Spirit. And most importantly, in this eucharist the Holy Spirit teaches and reminds us that we are God’s children !

This is the wonderful news for our celebration of Pentecost!

Alleluia Alleluia!!
