吳天福神父 (榮休) Fr. Thomas Ng (Retired)

吳天福神父於一九三二年四月十二日在香港出生,一九五零年進入慈幼會修道,先後於慈幼遠東哲學院和華僑書院(香港中文大學聯合書院前身)獲得教育文憑及中國文學學位,同期攻讀三年哲學。完成哲學課程後,他離港前往意大利都靈和英國雪菲爾(Sheffield)Melchet Court修讀神學,並從英國南咸開頓(South Hampton)的Joseph Rutzer主教手中領受鐸品。

一九六一年,吳神父回港後於維豪備修院任教務主任,並於澳門粵華中學和香港鄧鏡波中學出任校長。期間,他考取英國倫敦聖三一音樂學院和皇家音樂學院的初級文憑和教師文憑。一九七四至七七年間,吳神父於美國俄亥俄州立大學深造音樂,獲音樂博士銜。

從一九七七開始,吳神父服務於三藩市屋崙(Oakland,港譯奧克蘭)教區。他曾任聖良天主堂(St. Leo the Great Church)助理司鐸,一九八二年正式加入當地教會,並從八四年起出任屋崙天主教華人牧民中心主任。

吳神父於2007年秋季正式榮休。榮休後吳神父仍致力於華人天主教團體及其宗教音樂創作,以及擔任聖良堂中文歌詠團之指揮一職至2015年1月。

Father Ng was born in Hong Kong on April 12, 1932.  He entered the Salesian Congregation on August 15, 1950 in Shaukiwan, Hong Kong.  Father Ng was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend Joseph Rutzer of South Hampton, England, after three years of philosophical studies in Hong Kong and four years of theological studies at Turin, Italy and Melchet Court, Sheffield English, Hants, England.

Father Ng’s teaching ministry as a Salesian educator included:
• 1961-1963: Prefect of Studies in a junior seminary-Salesian “Savio” House of Studies, Shaukiwan, Hong Kong.
• 1963-1968: Headmaster of Yuet Wah College, Macau.
• 1968-1971: Headmaster of Tang King Po College, Hong Kong.
• 1971-1974: Minister of Religion and Headmaster of Yuet Wah College, Macau.
• 1974-1977: Attended Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

Father Ng earned the following diplomas and degrees:
• Diploma of Education from the Salesian Far East Institute of Education in 1953.
• B. A. in Chinese Literature from Hwa Kiu College Hong Kong in 1958.
• B. A. in Divinity from Salesian Institute of Theology, Melchet Court, England in 1961.
• A .Mus.TCL from Trinity College of Music, London in 1971.
• L.R.S.M. from the Royal Schools of Music, London in 1971.
• M.A. in Music Education from Ohio State University in 1974.
• M.M. in Music from Ohio State University in 1975.
• Ph.D. in Music from Ohio State University in 1977.

Father Ng came to the Oakland Diocese in September, 1977 and became Associate Pastor of St. Leos Church in October, 1977.  He became Hospital Chaplain of Kaiser, Peralta and Merrit hospitals in 1982 and began his service as Director of the Chinese Pastoral Center for the Oakland Diocese in 1984. Father Ng became an incardinated priest of the Diocese of Oakland on August 31,1982.

Father Ng retired in the Fall of 2007.  After his retirement, Father Ng remained active within the Chinese community.  He continued his work on numerous music compositions for church and was the choir conductor for the Cantonese choir at St. Leo until January 2015.
